Running is great exercise for many reasons. For starters, have
you ever seen a fat serious runner? Running is addicting and once you
start, it's easy to keep it up and reap the benefits of long term
exercise, which go far beyond simple weight loss.
One of the things I enjoy about running is that it is as intense or easy as you want. Just run faster or slower to vary intensity, and if you alternate walking and running that's fine too. Also, for those of us who are busy, running packs a lot of exercise into a small amount of time. At least for me, a 20 minute run is the equivalent of a 60 minute bike ride.
Also there is no specialized equipment necessary. Although you should have a pair of sneakers or maybe even a pair of running shoes if you really get into it, I'll even run barefoot on the beach sometimes.
Before you start, make sure it's OK with your doctor. It's best to consult a medical professional before starting any form of exercise program.
When you start, start slowly. Depending on your shape, you might only want to run a quarter mile the first few times. Give yourself plenty of time between runs to recuperate. I never run more than two days in a row, and prefer a day off minimum between runs. Three days a week, maybe four, is what I recommend for most folks, but even twice a week is great!
It doesn't matter how far or hard you run. Just get started and you'll find before long you are actually looking forward to it, although admittedly, any exercise is mentally tough at first if you are totally out of shape. Just start slowly!
