The majority of women have been on a diet some time in their
life. It doesn't matter whether it's The Atkins diet, The Cabbage Diet
or the Gi Diet, women are willing to try almost anything in their
frantic desire to lose weight. Unfortunately the results are usually the
same. They achieve some initial weight loss, only to put it back on
with more on top, no matter what diet they try. The reason why diets
don't work is because....
Most diets are hard to do as they involve major changes to our normal eating patterns, such as tedious calorie counting and weighing of food, not combining certain foods with others, eliminating all or most of our favourite foods, and having to cook and eat different meals to the rest of our family thus resulting in us feeling deprived and hungry all the time.
We might start off with a great deal of enthusiasm and determination in our quest to losing weight but this wears off pretty quickly when faced with every day pressures and temptations, making it almost impossible for us to stay on track.
Diets make you hungry and the very thought of being on a diet creates cravings for the very foods you are trying to avoid, which in turn makes you feel deprived and this then leads to bingeing thus creating a vicious circle. You then feel guilty and end up eating everything in sight, saying to yourself " I've cheated today so I might as well keep on eating, I'll start again tomorrow".
Before you know it you find yourself going from one diet to another, hoping to find the "Right one for you", but unfortunately there isn't such a diet and you end up yo-yo dieting, getting more and more frustrated and gaining more weight with each one.
Another reason why diets don't work is because they don't deal with the real problem when it comes to weight loss and women, which is often a psychological one. Emotional eating is one of the main things associated with overeating. Women in particular often turn to food for emotional comfort, this is especially true during menopause when perhaps they feel they are no longer needed as their children leave home to go to university, or because they don't feel as attractive as they once were.
Some turn to food to cope with negative feelings or low self-esteem.
The main reason why diets don't work is because, in order to achieve permanent weight loss you have to make permanent changes to your eating and exercise habits; If not you will find yourself reverting to your old eating habits and no matter how much weight you have managed to lose, it will all come back and you will find yourself back to square one, so to achieve long term weight loss, you need to make some long term lifestyle changes!
