Workout And Diet Tips To Start Off Your Weight Loss Journey

Even if your health is not at risk, there is a weight that you consider ideal; there is a way you wish you looked and sometimes it means taking up a workout routine and watching your diet to achieve what your heart desires. The good thing about weight loss is that nothing is impossible to achieve, you just have to set your mind to it and approach your goals in the most sensible way.

When it comes to losing weight, working out alone will not deliver the expected results. It is always best that you combine your workouts with the appropriate diet program so you maximize the results and reach your objectives easily and effectively for that matter. Here are a few top diet and workout tips that can help you begin your weight loss journey on a high.

Tip 1 - Choose the right time to exercise
Exercising is important and you should therefore choose a time of day that you find most suitable.

Some recommend working out in the morning to kick start your metabolism, but it is just as rewarding to exercise at any other given time as long as you do it right. For instance, if you exercise in the morning hours, eat small amounts that digest fast so you can refuel your body. If you choose the evenings, then ensure that it is not that close to your bedtime so you do not end up disrupting your sleep.

Tip 2 - Factor in the fluids
Water is quite essential when working out and when you are working on your weight too. Ensure therefore, that you drink enough of it throughout the day. It keeps you hydrated and promotes bodily functions so your every effort with diet and the exercises pay off in the end. You might want to skip on caffeine, especially before or after exercises because it removes water from the system dehydrating you in the process. It is also important that you be cautious with energy drinks because most are loaded with sugar and caffeine.

Tip 3 - Vary your activities
Developing a fitness plan is very beneficial. When doing so, make sure that you vary the activities to keep your program interesting. It can get boring when you do the same thing day in day out. Keep things fresh by rotating between your favorite activities. Since you know the exact areas that you are targeting with your program, choose the best and exciting ones that will keep you going towards your objectives.

Tip 4 - Choose healthy foods and cook yourself
The best thing about cooking your food yourself is that you know exactly what goes into the meal and you are not taking chances. Bypass the high calorie foods and junk foods that are mouthwatering but end up dragging you back. Go for fresh produce and choose ingredients with care. You also want to cook more than you can eat so you have a healthy meal waiting for you even after you have had a busy day at work that could prompt you to eat fast foods.

4 Myths About Juice Cleansing

By

There's nothing wrong with drinking juice, although it's not as healthful as eating fresh fruits and vegetables, which are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plenty of fiber, especially in their skins and pulp.

But when a person is downing only fruit and vegetable juice as part of a juice cleanse — usually 16 ounces of juice every few hours, plus unlimited water — and often forgoing food for 3 to 5 days or longer, that's an extreme approach, many nutrition experts say.

And juice cleanses don't involve the typical juice carton found in the supermarket. They require expensive, prepackaged bottles of pulverized produce blends (or they can be homemade in a juicer or blender). The trendy beverages might be a green mixture containing kale, spinach, green apple, cucumber, celery and lettuce or a red concoction made with apple, carrot, beets, lemon and ginger.

Marketers promote juice cleanses as a way to spring-clean a person's insides, ridding them of toxic overload, regaining balance after a period of unhealthful eating, or jump-starting wholesome habits. But not everyone agrees that all-liquid diets and juice cleanses are a way to wellness.

Juice cleanses and liquid detox diets are not a healthful or safe approach to weight loss, said Joy Dubost, a dietitian in Washington, D.C., and a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "There's no scientific research that it provides benefits in the short or long term, and it's not an overall healthy approach to eating," she said.

Dubost suggested four misconceptions that people might have about juice cleanses, and other liquid-cleansing regimens.

Myth No. 1: People need to detox in order to be healthy.

The body detoxifies itself naturally, primarily through the action of the liver, kidneys and gastrointestinal (GI) tract, Dubost said. These organs help remove toxins or harmful substances that should not be stored in the body, she said.

Since the body is always in a natural state of cleansing itself, a person does not need to do a juice cleanse or follow a liquid detox diet to be healthy, Dubost said. [9 Healthy Habits You Can Do in 1 Minute (Or Less)]

Myth No. 2: Cleansing is good for your body — it can improve your energy and health.

A juice cleanse offers people a false sense of security that they are doing something beneficial, when in fact people who do these cleanses are doing anything but that, Dubost said. She said the body automatically detoxifies itself, so there's no need to do a juice cleanse to get rid of toxins.

During the first few days of a juice cleanse, a person initially burns their glycogen stores for energy.

Using glycogen (the stored form of glucose) pulls a lot of water out of the body, Dubost said, which can show up as weight loss on the scale. A cleanse could also lead to side effects such as a lack of energy, headaches and shakiness due to low blood sugar. Over time, a cleanse may lead to constipation from a lack of fiber, as well as irritability, she added.

Once a person comes off a cleanse, and eats food, that individual could gain all this weight right back, Dubost said. Although she understands that some people may experience a psychological lift from a cleanse, such as perhaps feeling ready or motivated to adopt healthier eating habits, she still doesn't promote the practice, she said.

Myth No. 3: A juice cleanse is a good way to lose weight.

Cleansing is ineffective as a long-term solution to weight loss, Dubost said. A person may shed pounds in the beginning of a cleanse, but this is due to a loss of water, she said.

But the loss of water weight comes at the expense of a loss of muscle, which is a steep price to pay, Dubost said. Weight loss is not always about the numbers on a scale, it's also about the ratio of body fat compared to lean muscle mass, she pointed out.

In other words, the desired outcome of a weight-loss program is to lose more fat than muscle. This might not happen on a restrictive diet like a cleanse because it's low in dietary protein and calories, and while doing one, someone might not have the energy to exercise, which can build muscle.

Having more lean muscle and less body fat means burning more calories and boosting metabolism, in the long run.

"There are much healthier alternatives to losing weight and ensuring that the body is working at its best," Dubost added. [Colon Cleansing: 7 Myths Busted]
Myth No. 4: Since celebrities do cleanses, it's something dietitians would recommend.

Celebrities from Beyoncé and Oprah to Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek have popularized the idea of cleansing. Some stars have tried the approach as a quick way to lose weight, while others have done it to feel healthy after overindulging. Paltrow enthused that a three-week cleanse "worked wonders." "I feel pure and happy and much lighter," reported the slender actress, in Goop, her weekly newsletter, in 2009.

Once people hear the hype and that the "beautiful people" are doing it, everybody else wants to jump on the bandwagon, Dubost said. But it's not a healthful approach, she maintained.

Like other fad diets, cleansing and so-called detox diets promise a quick fix, she said.

"Cleansing may produce short-term results, but it definitely doesn't produce long-term benefits," Dubost said.

Chewing Gum Doesn't Lead to Weight Loss, Study Suggests

By

Contrary to popular diet advice, chewing gum may not help people eat less or lose weight, new research suggests.

In fact, the study, published in the April issue of the journal Eating Behaviors, suggests that chewing gum may lead people to eat chips, cookies and candy instead of fruits and veggies. That's because menthol, the chemical responsible for the minty-fresh flavor of some types of gum makes fruits and veggies taste funny.

The chemical change is the same reason why "when you brush your teeth and then drink orange juice, it tastes bad," said study co-author Christine Swoboda, a doctoral candidate in nutrition at Ohio State University.

Weight-loss aid?
Chewing gum can aid test performance, and xylitol-sweetened gum may reduce ear infections in children.

And because it may evoke thoughts of food and get digestive juices flowing, some people hypothesized that chewing gum could make people hungrier. But scientists have also hypothesized the opposite — that the act of chewing could make people feel more full and, in turn, eat less. To test that claim, the gum manufacturer Wrigley even offers grants for scientific research on the subject.

[The 7 Biggest Diet Myths Debunked]
But despite claims to the contrary, only a few studies have looked at whether chewing gum aids weight loss, and these have found conflicting results, Swoboda said.

"We were interested in seeing 'Does this really help with weight loss?'" Swoboda told LiveScience.

Bad taste
To find out, Swoboda and colleague Jennifer Temple of the University at Buffalo asked 44 volunteers to play a slotmachine-style game in exchange for food. Some of the participants played for mandarin oranges or grapes, while others played for potato chips or M&Ms.

Prior to playing the game, half of the participants chewed either Juicy Fruit gum or Wrigley's Spearmint gum.

Those who chewed the minty gum were significantly less likely to play as long for the fruit, suggesting they were less motivated to get them when chewing gum. The fruity gum showed a smaller effect that wasn't statistically significant.

In a second experiment, the researchers asked participants to keep a food journal recording what they ate. Some of the time, the participants were asked to chew a mint green-tea gum before every meal and snack for a week, while other times, they simply had to record their food intake.

When chewing gum, participants ate fewer meals. But that didn't translate into fewer calories: Instead, people were actually getting fewer nutrients in their diet and about the same amount of calories.

It could be that the menthol in mint, which interacts with nutrients in fruits and veggies to create a bitter flavor, was turning people off to the healthy foods, Swoboda said.

People "ate less fruits and vegetables, because in their head, they thought 'I have to chew gum before every meal — do I really want a snack of grapefruit?'" she said. "Whereas, they were like, 'I'm so hungry I'm going to eat this double cheeseburger and it will taste the same.'"

Long-term effect?
The findings are interesting, but they don't reveal how gum might change people's eating habits in the long run, said Brett Carter, a food behavior researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, who was not involved in the study.

In addition, using food diaries is a notoriously inaccurate measure of calories, Carter added.
"As you can imagine people aren't very good at keeping track of exactly how they eat," Carter told LiveScience. "Translating it to calories can lend itself to a lot of error."

Lose Weight Smartly: 7 Little-Known Tricks that Shave Pounds Part 1

By

Intro

Dangerous crash diets may lead to short-term weight loss, but dropping extra pounds for the long haul can be trickier.

Attaining a new shape does mean adhering to some old advice small, steady changes in eating and exercise habits are still the best predictors of lasting weight loss, experts say. But that doesn't mean dieting needs to be boring.

A few smart tricks incorporated into a healthier lifestyle can help. Here are some fresh tactics for shaving pounds, including a few that put a new spin on the tried-and-true.

Say no to numbers

When the ingredient list on packaged food includes numbers, put it down. Ingredients that include numbers as part of their names usually identify an item as a "convenience food" that's full of fat and preservatives, said Dr. Carson Liu, a Los Angeles-based bariatric surgeon.

"If you're trying to lose weight, it's very, very difficult to do so with processed foods," Liu said, because they have so many carbs, sugars and hidden ingredients."
For the same reason, Liu recommends shutting the door on meal deliveries, whether they're a month's worth of diet food hyped on TV or a triple cheeseburger from a greasy spoon.

"It's an unsustainable and extremely costly habit," he said.

Dieting commandment: Lettuce not eat lonely salads

"Eating just a salad for lunch is probably the worst meal for weight management," said Manuel Villacorta, a San Francisco-based dietician and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. "Have the salad, but have a sandwich with it, or a bowl of bean soup."
As low-calorie as all those salad veggies are, without carbohydrates, they do nothing to knock down levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin, which tells the brain when to eat. Villacorta recommended carb-containing foods such as fruits, grains, pasta and bread.

"If you're not eating enough, you're not lowering your ghrelin amounts, and you'll eat more later," Villacorta said.

5 Tips to Help You Lose Weight This Holiday Season

By

Most people I know aren't worried about losing weight during the holiday season. Instead, this tends to be the one time of year when we give ourselves a break from obsessing about going down a pant size, and instead focus on maintaining weight.

But countering indulgence with some healthy habits may just help tip the scales in the other direction, without much effort on your part at all. Here are some tips that may help you lose weight this holiday season.
  1. Cut liquid calories. Cutting back on a glass of wine with dinner or that cold beer after a long day can reduce your overall daily intake by about 100 calories, making way for another few bites of that Christmas pie. Instead of soda or fruit juice, drink water with lemon, or herbal tea.
  2. Try a salad starter. One study, published in  2004 in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, found that women who started meals with a salad ate 10 percent fewer calories over the course of a day, without consciously dieting. [7 Salads to Add Veggies to Your Diet]
  3. Go nuts. Eating a handful of peanuts daily may help you keep weight off. In fact, people who ate peanuts or mixed nuts daily were more likely to keep from gaining weight than those who didn't consume high-fat snacks, according to a 2001 study in the International Journal of Obesity. Maybe those roasted chestnuts aren't such a bad idea.
  4. Just stand up. If you're planning to entertain this holiday season, sitting probably isn't a luxury you'll experience often, but the rest of us can use a reminder to get off the couch. The average person burns about 40 more calories per hour by standing than they do by sitting.
  5. Sleep soundly. A lack of sleep is often associated with weight gain, as well as metabolic problems, according to a study published this year in the journal Lancet. Be sure to get adequate shut eye around the holidays to help keep your metabolism healthy.

Stepping on a Scale Daily May Help You Lose Weight

By

If you are trying to lose weight and keep it off, weighing yourself daily and tracking your weight over time may help you accomplish those goals, according to a new study.

In the study, researchers found that, among people who were trying to lose weight, those who weighed themselves daily and recorded their results lost about 3 percent of their body weight, on average, over the course of a year. In comparison, people who did not weigh themselves daily did not see a significant change in their weight, on average.

Moreover, after that year, the people who weighed themselves daily were able to maintain their weight loss for another year, which is important because maintaining a new, lower weight without gaining pounds back tends to be more difficult for people than losing weight, the researchers said.

"There are thousands of ways of losing weight," said study author David Levitsky, a professor of nutrition and psychology at Cornell University. "Losing weight is not the problem, but to maintain that weight loss is the problem."
In the study, researchers told 162 people that they were allowed to do whatever they would normally do to lose weight for a year. The goal for all of the people in the study was to lose 10 percent of their initial body weight.

But the researchers gave scales to 88 of the participants, and told them that they should weigh themselves every morning and track their results on a chart. The remaining 74 people were not provided with scales, nor were they told to weigh themselves. [The Best Smart Scale]
The investigators also found that nearly 29 percent of the people who weighed themselves daily lost at least 5 percent of their initial weight during the year, but only about 11 percent of the people in the comparison group lost at least that much.

In both groups, the percentage of people who actually reached the goal of losing at least 10 percent of their body weight over the course of a year was small. However, it was still higher among those who weighed themselves daily — nearly 9 percent, compared with nearly 5 percent in the comparison group.

Recently, a lot of advice related to weight loss has implied that people should not weigh themselves frequently. However, the idea that people should avoid stepping on a scale daily "was not based on very empirical data," Levitsky said.

The new results suggest the opposite is true — that daily weighing may help with weight loss, the researchers said.

"There is a lot of data coming out now showing that the more frequently you weigh yourself, the better you are able to control your weight," Levitsky told Live Science.

It is not clear why, exactly, weighing oneself every day seems to be beneficial for weight loss.

However, it may have something to do with making people become more conscious about what they eat, and reinforcing the behaviors that aid weight loss, such as skipping dessert, the researchers said.

But weighing yourself may also act as a way to punish behaviors that are detrimental to weight loss.

"If you find what you did yesterday made you gain weight, I think that acts as a negative reinforcement," Levitsky said.

The new study was published June 17 in the Journal of Obesity.

Lap-Band And Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy And Its Fine Profits

By Amy Schmidt

Commonly, laparoscopic surgery is applied to alleviate obesity and assist patients with intense overweight issues, and it focus on applications of modern telescopes to clearly and easily perform minor incisions. Within this article are the descriptions of severe obesity, surgical and medical treatments, its procedures, and outcomes. Also, severe obesity refers to weight which exceeds the normal conditions.

In addition, this deficiency was associated to the presence of chronic illnesses including diabetes, hypertension, and coronary artery disease. Numerous therapeutic medications were administered to relieve those deficiencies including the behavioral modification, calorie diets, and exercise therapies, however the Lap-Band and Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy was popular due to its lifelong advantages.

It might result from low metabolism with low energy expenditures and excessive calorie consumptions, however in some situations, it has become the assimilation of both. A scientific finding has declared that those deficiencies have resulted from genetic characteristics and inheritance from your parents. Likewise, it has resulted from the emotional, genetic, social, cultural, and psychological influences which are experienced from complex difficulties centralized on appetite regulation and energy metabolism.

Primarily, there are two prominent surgeries for those disorders, such as the surgical and medical procedures. With scientific studies, it has been indicated that your participation in nonmedical medication and programs have attained desirable and efficient weight after the span of five years. Even though prescriptions and nonprescription therapies are provided for weight loss, there are no implications of its lifelong benefits.

Moreover, medications which concentrate on lessening your appetite have caused the reduction of your personal mass, yet it could be rapidly regained after terminating those therapies. Different professional sessions concentrate on the usage of behavior modification procedures, which were mixed with improved physical movements and low calorie diets. On the other hand, the surgical treatments are being introduced for the previous 40 to 50 years.

Malabsorbtion surgeries, Rouxen Y gastric bypass, gastric banding, and vertical banded gastroplasty are some of the most common treatments. Also, the vertical banded gastroplasty focuses on the creations of minor pouches that limit some outlets to the lower areas of your stomach, belly, and intestines. Secondly, outlets are reinforced with minor amounts of mesh to prevent dilation and disruptions.

Laparoscopic gastric band focuses on applying collars and belts around the uppermost areas, creating fixed outlets and minor pouches on your stomach. An adjustable band is charged with sterile saline, and with its integrations, outlets are created into smaller components to create deeper restrictions on those areas. Gastric bypass refers to the procedure which focuses on slicing your stomach and creating minor gastric pouches.

Next, it was connected to secondary sections of your small intestines, while the malabsorbtion procedures lessen the dimensions of your intestines. Choices for the different methods are attained in conformity to your surgeon recommendations, altogether with insights regarding your appetite or eating routines. Moreover, different profits from those surgeries pertain to the reduced discomfort, improved cosmesis, and enhanced metabolism.

It was advisable to acquire in depth comprehension from those procedures, and your doctors have effectively offer those details. You need to deliberate your conditions, specifications, and requirements with those specialists and understand its consequences and benefits. Although it was technically created, the purposes of those methods are to offer better, longer, and healthier routines for you.

How to Get Started on a Weight Loss Program

 By

If you've made the decision to lose weight, you might be wondering where to begin.

To help you get started, Live Science spoke with many weight loss experts and combed the literature on the topic. Here are some tips for getting started on a weight loss program:
Take a close look at your current lifestyle
Before you embark on a weight loss program, it's a good idea to think carefully about your current lifestyle and to identify behaviors that might have contributed to weight gain. One way to do this is to keep a food diary, in which you log all the food you eat for a few days. This helps you become more aware of what you eat, and when, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Then, you can think in more concrete ways about how you might change some of your habits to work toward losing weight. For example, keeping a log might help you realize that when you skip meals, you tend to overeat later on. Or, you might find that you eat an extra 500 calories at the office on days when co-workers bring in treats.

With a concrete plan in place, you can establish new behaviors, like eating four smaller meals a day so you aren't so hungry later on, or eating healthier foods that will help keep your appetite satisfied for longer, said Liz Applegate, director of sports nutrition at the University of California, Davis.

Set a realistic goal
Determine how much weight you want to lose, and set short-term goals along the way to your ultimate goal. Doctors generally recommend that people aim to lose 5 to 10 percent of their body weight over six months. But to get there, you should make specific, short-term goals, such as taking three 20-minute walks per week, or always having vegetables with dinner, according to the CDC.

It's also important that your goals be realistic. With lifestyle changes, you should expect gradual, steady weight loss, but not immediate results.

"There's no diet that's going to be healthy long term that will help you lose 20 pounds over a month," said Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Calculate your caloric intake
To lose weight, you'll need to consume fewer calories than you burn. The exact number will depend on your current weight and activity level, but generally, people should aim to cut 250 to 1,000 calories from their diet per day in order to lose 0.5 to 2 lbs. (0.23 to 0.9 kilograms) per week. You can use a calculator, such as the National Institutes of Health Body Weight Planner, to determine how many calories a day you need to consume to maintain your current weight and how many you need to cut out to lose weight.

Monitor your progress
Finally, you should keep track of your progress toward your goals and tweak them if needed. "Studies are clear that self-monitoring is important," said Katherine Tallmadge, a registered dietitian and op-ed contributor to Live Science. For example, you may want to use a pedometer or other device to keep track of how far you're walking, Tallmadge said.

If you seem to be having trouble meeting a goal, see how you can refine the goal or your behaviors in order to meet it. For example, if you haven't been able to fit in a morning walk as you resolved to do, see if you can fit the walk in at lunchtime instead, the CDC says. On the other hand, if a goal you set is too easy, see if you can make it more challenging.

What All Effective Weight-Loss Diets Have in Common

What All Effective Weight-Loss Diets Have in Common

Sara G. Miller Staff Writer
LiveScience.com
Low-fat, low-carb, low-sugar, high-protein, Mediterranean — with so many diets out there and new, sometimes-conflicting research coming out all the time on the best ones for weight loss, how can you possibly know which one will be the most effective in helping you shed pounds?
And for doctors and scientists who spend their time designing and carrying out studies, fad diets make for an added challenge.

But instead of trying to figure out which diet is best overall, doctors and scientists should focus on determining which diet is best for a certain person, said Christopher Gardner, a research professor of medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Gardner gave a talk on the best diets for weight loss on Nov. 14 at the American Heart Association's (AHA) Scientific Sessions annual meeting in New Orleans. [Diet and Weight Loss: The Best Ways to Eat]
Gardner started his talk with a brief history of how major medical organizations have approached weight loss. In 1988, for example, the National Institutes of Health concluded that the best diet for weight loss was a low-fat diet, Gardner said. More recently, in 2013, the AHA, along with the American College of Cardiology and The Obesity Society, released recommendations that included 15 different diets, ranging from vegetarian-style diets to high-protein diets.

But there's a catch to this approach of recommending so many diets, Gardner said: All of the diets work if "a reduction in energy intake is achieved," he said. In other words, you have to consume fewer calories.

Some recommended diets explicitly call for people to cut their calorie intake, while others do not. The evidence shows that diets are effective for weight loss if they do not have a "formal prescribed energy restriction" but they do have a "realized energy deficit" — in other words, when a person isn't told to eat fewer calories but ends up doing so anyway because he or she is following the diet, Gardner said.

"This is the key," Gardner said. "What has thwarted us forever is satiety issues," he said. (Satiety is a feeling of fullness.)
If you're not told you need to eat fewer calories but you still end up eating fewer calories, it's usually because you're not hungry, Gardner said. "Different diets are working for different people because they're satiated," he said. [The Science of Hunger: How to Control It and Fight Cravings]

Eat your nutrients

With that in mind, what should people look for when considering a diet for weight loss?
The government outlines the amounts of macronutrients people should get each day in order to keep chronic diseases at bay and stay healthy, Gardner said. These recommendations are called the "acceptable macronutrient distribution range."
The recommendations say that for adults, carbohydrates should make up 45 to 65 percent of a person's daily calories, protein should make up 10 to 35 percent and fat should make up 20 to 35 percent.

If a person stays within these ranges, he or she will get the right amount of nutrients to stay healthy, Gardner said.

A lot of diets fall within these ranges, Gardner said. For example, the diet recommended by the government's ChooseMyPlate program is about 55 percent carbohydrates, 15 percent protein and 30 percent fat. And the diet that Americans eat, on average, is about 45 percent carbohydrates, 20 percent protein and 35 percent fat.

Gardner pointed out that other diets, including some diets that are considered trendy, don't fall within these ranges. The Atkins diet, for example, is about 15 percent carbohydrates, 35 percent protein and 50 percent fat. And some versions of the paleo diet call for about 30 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein and 40 percent fat.

This means that, in the course of getting your calories in these distributions of macronutrients, you'd fail to get all of your adequate nutrients, Gardner said. If a diet is going to work for weight loss, it also has to meet your nutrient requirements, he said.

What diets have in common

Although popular diets can often seem at odds with one another (take, for example, the fat-rich Atkins diet compared with the very-low-fat Ornish diet), there are three things that all diets appear to have in common, Gardner said.

All of the popular diets include vegetables and suggest avoiding both added sugars and refined grains, Gardner said. These three points, taken together, account for the majority of Americans' problems with diets, he said.

Weight Loss and Nutrition - Am I Getting Too Much Nutrition?

Nutrition is such an important part of weight loss, and unfortunately most people have little knowledge or any at all about proper nutrition. It is no wonder that so many people are getting sick because of inadequate nutrition.

Even though the United States has the most overweight people on the planet, sad to say there a lot of people who are malnourished. Being overweight does not mean that you are getting proper nutrition.

As a matter of fact most overweight and obese people are significantly malnourished. Bacon, eggs, and toast would be a breakfast that most people think would be a nutritious start to the day. This could not be further from the truth. Even though that breakfast would contain a few elements of needed nutrients, most of that breakfast would be completely devoid of any usable nutrition.

The bacon is so high in fact, all else, bad cholesterol, and sodium, that most food scientists do not even classify it as a food. Sure this food will make you fat but it does nothing for the nutritional needs of your body. The typical American breakfast is coffee and doughnuts, and every now and then some Bacon, eggs and white bread. These foods are completely devoid of fiber and proper usable nutrients.

Because of a heavy meat dairy, and seafood diet the United States of America has become the fastest nation on the planet, with over 65% of all Americans overweight. So it is time to change our eating habits and pay closer attention to the foods we eat so that we can give our body the proper nutrition it so desperately needs.

The most nutritious diet you could ever have especially if you need to lose weight, is a diet that is high in plant-based fiber and low in fat and oils from animal sources. Now I am not saying that you need to become a vegetarian, although that would be the ideal, but you will need to significantly reduce the animal products that you consume In order to allow your body to get the nutrition it wants.

Increasing the amount of fiber in the diet will have two important effect on your weight loss. One is the fact that you will have more fiber in your diet and reduce your hunger due to the fact that fiber is filling, but low in fat. Fiber will keep you regular and help to eliminate the toxins from the body and help your body absorb the nutrients it needs. Fiber also has the added benefit of regulating your blood sugar levels by slowly releasing sugars into the blood stream.

High fiber foods usually contains lots of vitamins and minerals that are easily absorbed by the body.

So my advice is to reduce your animal food product by 80% and increase your plant base foods by 80%, this will give you the nutrition you need and at the same time eliminating waste and help you lose weight.

Guidelines On Choosing The Best Professional In Physical Therapy Russellville

By Diane Reed

Choosing a qualified therapist may be a hard task if a client is new in the market. In most cases, customers who have never acquired physical therapy Russellville may be challenged in accessing quality services from proficient providers. Not hard or fast regulations in choosing a particular professional. However, some guideline may be helpful to your research.

Make sure you get several recommendations from your physician before starting your research on the best professional. This is the right way in ensuring that you identify professionals who are well reputed and known in delivering the right provisions. Doctors work with interesting therapy professionals who can offer quality treatment services. Your doctor may also give you vital information about any given therapist in this field.

You can also consult your friends, coworkers as well as neighbors who have experienced such services before. Many people attend PT. Individuals who have undergone the physical manipulation procedures will have more information regarding the services provider who gave them the services. The people you trust can guide you in choosing a practitioner who will provide you with the right services.

The use of the internet can be helpful in selecting a competent therapist who will meet your physical needs. Many therapists have put their information on their websites. Visiting such websites can assist you in knowing the various details regarding the location, rates, type of technology as well as staffs of a particular hospital. You can also confirm problems regarding their services through the Internet.

Experience is a critical element to consider when looking for a good therapist. This is because therapy is a wide field that will demand a significant experience. An experienced professional in PT has confidence in all his or her undertaking and understand the diverse needs of his and her clients. Get a therapist who will be ready to offer the advice on any physical condition you may have.

Licensing as well as accreditation is a core element in therapy. Certification helps states in sorting out the legal service providers and knowing the illegal providers. You should, however, note that, different therapists are certified to perform different operations. For instance, professionals who deal with hand joints have their own licenses. Check the validity of all the certificates and permits of any professional too. Therapists who perform neurodevelopment operations can also have different kinds of permits.

The expert you are working with must have a well-equipped clinic from where he or she will be able to serve you. Advanced out-patient and in-patient clinics always use incredible technology in executing their provisions. This is a sure way of reducing technical errors which are bound to occur during any healing procedure.

The rates offered by different clinics also matter very much. Ensure that you assess the various rates available in the market. Let the therapists present to you comprehensive estimates involving all the service you may be getting. In this way, you will gauge the services offered by the therapist depending on the rates offered. You need to be careful not to compromise the eminence of therapy services offered with the kind of rates indicated.

11 Grab-and-Go Snacks for Type 2 Diabetes N°2

2 / 12   Unsalted Nuts

Reviewed by Maureen Namkoong, RD

Although all nuts — including almonds, pecans, pistachios, and peanuts — are packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats, walnuts may be more beneficial because of their uniquely high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. In a study published in April 2013 in The Journal of Nutrition, women who ate 8 ounces (oz) of walnuts or more a month (or 2 oz per week) reduced their risk of type 2 diabetes by 24 percent. Cipullo suggests choosing raw or dry roasted nuts with no added salt or sugar and limiting servings to a small handful (about 1 oz).

Weight Loss and Nutrition

Common nutrition/weight-loss myths

Many different people have many different theories when it comes to weight-loss and nutrition. There are so many different opinions in fact that it simply can not be possible for all theories to work. Here are some common theories that are widely accepted as the "truth" by many people who fall into the losing weight through dieting trap of the mass media:

1. Eat less to lose more - This is just NOT true. Because of this outrageous myth, people are starving themselves and ignoring their inner yearning for proper nutrition and some of these people then "binge eat" because they are so hungry from their bout of starvation. Not only do these people lose muscle mass (wastage of muscle results in immediate weight loss and decrease in metabolic rate) but they immediately store all of their "binge" foods as fat. Not the formula to success.

2. Eat just one type of food - The human body needs some sort of variety for healthy function. There are literally hundreds of vitamins and minerals that the body requires just to avoid disease. These are essential for losing weight and are unfortunately ignored by many people in their latest "diet-craze" attempt to burn fat.

3. Eat lots of small meals - This has some truth to it actually! Although eating more small meals throughout the day will not burn fat on its own, this strategy, when combined with others, is an effective way to fulfill the body's energy requirements without causing an insulin spike which results in immediate fat storage throughout the body.

What is the secret to weight loss and nutrition?

There is only one philosophy I go by which has seen countless clients of mine achieve great results and that is:

Eat foods as close to their raw source as possible, often enough that you are never "starving" but never "bloating". Also make sure you follow your daily caloric needs for maximum results

What Is the Keto Diet, and Should You Be Trying It?

What Is the Keto Diet, and Should You Be Trying It?

The bigger, badder version of the paleo diet helped star athletes like LeBron James trim down. But is the keto diet right for the rest of us?

  By Giselle Castro

There's a lot of recent buzz about the ketogenic diet, aka the "keto diet," which has received a ton of praise from elite athletes (eh hem, LeBron James) as it is low in carbohydrates and high in good fats, and it provides a lot of energy. The idea is that by eating high-fat, moderate-protein, and fewer carbs, the body goes into ketosis, or the metabolic state in which ketone bodies (fat-like molecules) become the main fuel source instead of glucose.

How does that break down into a daily diet? When meal planning, you're aiming to get 70 to 75 percent of your calories from fat, 20 to 25 percent from protein, and 5 to 10 percent from carbohydrates. You're mostly allowed to eat whole, unprocessed foods—ones that are high in fat and protein, along with a few complex carbs. High-carb foods are completely cut out, though, so say goodbye to grains, potatoes, beans, syrups, pastries, fruit, and even milk. Basically, if it tastes sweet or has an "-ose" on the end, you're going to have to ditch it. Why? Supporters of the keto diet point to studies that have found endurance athletes who eat low-carb and high-fat burn more fat during their performances compared to their carb-eating peers.

It all sounds pretty good, right? (Well, except for that whole no dairy and pastries part.) Before you drop everything though, here are a few more things you should know.

It was not originally intended for weight loss. Although the keto diet is being used for weight loss and to help athletes perform better, it wasn't initially meant to do any of that. Instead, it was created in the early 20th century to help children with epilepsy control their seizures. According to Paul Salter, M.S., R.D., C.S.C.S., before the keto diet was introduced most epileptic patients were advised to fast, but that proved to be difficult for many. "It was found that by eating high-fat and low-carb, it produced the same metabolic changes as a fasted approach, which meant increased liver production of three molecules (ketone bodies) acetone, β-hydroxybutyrate, and acetoacetate," says Salter. It's still unclear to experts why it helps, but for now, it's working.

Its popularity is surpassing other diets. The keto diet does require a low percentage of carb intake, but it makes up for it by allowing dieters to eat higher fat content and adequate protein. In fact, the diet is becoming increasingly popular with those who are both active and overweight. Like many diets, though, some that don't follow it correctly can be discouraged when they don't see results right away. "Common mistakes include not reducing carbohydrates low enough, consuming too much protein, not sticking with the diet long enough [there's a 4- to 6-week adaption period], and inappropriately introducing carbs regularly through weekly re-feeds," explains Salter.

It can increase your energy—but requires a lot of effort. Joshua Shadle, founder and CEO of Fuelary, did the keto diet while training for a triathlon. "I had to really focus for the first few months while my body transitioned into fat burning because I experienced flu-like symptoms. But then I was instructed to add extra sodium [to help with the water loss you experience on the diet], and that helped," he says. Once the temporary symptoms passed, Shadle says he eventually noticed a big increase in energy, which helped contribute to his losing 10 pounds.

It helps blast fat like woah. "By avoiding carbohydrates and minimizing the amount of protein you consume in a day, you effectively lower both your blood sugar and insulin levels, which promotes weight loss," says Westin Childs, Ph.D. Matt Sauerhoff, owner and creator of the LIV method, says that unlike carbs and proteins, which contain 4 calories per gram, fats contain 9 calories per gram, giving you more energy per gram overall—making it easier to control hunger pangs and feel motivated to work out. A carb-heavy diet, on the other hand, raises your blood glucose levels and signals insulin secretion, which can lead to fat storage and a more sluggish mood.

It's not for those who hate planning. Salter warns that while this diet can be effective, it's not for everyone. "Those focused purely on performance in high-intensity, anaerobic movements may benefit most from following a higher-carbohydrate diet, because high-intensity movements rely heavily on carbohydrates for strength and power," he says.

It may not be a great idea for those who hate planning ahead, too. Salter points out that, other than the restrictions you have to be sure to keep in mind, hydration gets overlooked when it comes to this diet. That often leads to people giving up too soon (not to mention dehydration can have a negative effect on your health). So preparation is key. "Consistently restricting carbohydrates leads to depletion of muscle glycogen stores. And for every gram of glycogen lost, roughly 3 grams of water are lost," he says. So be sure to always have a water bottle on hand, and make sure you're getting in enough throughout the day.

At the end of the day, it's up to you. Yes, there is a laundry list of health conditions noted that, if you experience any of them, you shouldn't try the keto diet (including if you're pregnant or have had gastric bypass surgery). But some personal trainers, like Sauerhoff, think it's better to avoid the keto diet altogether and strive for a well-balanced diet instead. The golden rule: "Try to be mindful about the quality and quantity of foods you are consuming and staying away from processed foods," he says. And at the end of the day, consult with your doctor and possibly a nutritionist to find a plan that works best for your lifestyle.

Peer-facilitated or life or fitness coach-led group sessions allow participants to share their experiences so that everyone can learn from it. These discussions are also therapeutic since these are avenues by which participants can vent out their frustrations about the obstacles that prevent them from reaching their desired weight goal.

Are Vegetarian Diets Heart-Healthier?

Study finds no significant difference in 10-year cardiovascular risk, but one expert is skeptical of research.
"I wouldn't say a vegetarian diet is useless for preventing cardiovascular risk," said study leader Dr. Hyunseok Kim.

However, the heart benefits on a population level may be less than some believe, said Kim, an internal medicine resident at Rutgers New Jersey School of Medicine in Newark.

The study findings puzzleded one nutritionist who said previous research has indicated that a vegetarian diet is good for the heart.

The study used U.S. national survey data to compare adult vegetarians to thousands of meat eaters. While vegetarians were thinner, their overall heart risk wasn't actually different, according to the study.

"Followers of the vegetarian diet do have lower risks of obesity, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome," all risk factors for heart disease, Kim said. But that may be partly because vegetarians are often younger and female, so they're already at lower risk for heart disease, the study said.

Kim and his Rutgers colleagues used the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2010. It included nearly 12,000 adults age 20 or older. Of those, 263 -- 2.3 percent -- followed a vegetarian diet.

The researchers examined rates of obesity, average waist circumference, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome -- a cluster of conditions, including high cholesterol and glucose levels -- that raise the risk for heart disease.

They also assessed the Framingham cardiovascular-disease risk estimate, which factors in age, gender, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and smoking status to predict the chances of developing cardiovascular disease in the next decade.

When the researchers calculated the participants' Framingham risk, the vegetarians had a risk of 2.7 percent, while the non-vegetarians had a 4.5 percent risk. The difference between the groups was not statistically significant, Kim said.

The findings surprised one nutrition expert.

"We would certainly consider this study as we look for more data on the health benefits of vegetarian diets, but this study is contrary to evidence provided in the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and in a position paper of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics," said Connie Diekman. She's the director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis.

Under those guidelines, "consuming more fruits and vegetables is connected with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease," Diekman said. Eating more whole grains is also thought to lower the risk, she noted.

"The Academy position states that a vegetarian diet is associated with a lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease," added Diekman, who wasn't involved in the study.

She said she encourages people to adopt a diet "that more closely resembles a vegetarian eating plan."

The study is cross-sectional, sort of a snapshot in time, Kim said, so that is one inherent limitation. Another is that people self-reported their diet.

Studies that follow people over time are needed to better assess the benefits of vegetarian diets, Kim added.

Kim presented the findings Monday at the American College of Gastroenterology meeting in Las Vegas. Research presented at medical meetings is viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. The study had no outside funding and no industry funding.

How to Lose Weight Faster, But Safely

How to Lose Weight Faster, But Safely

No gimmicks, no lies — just 11 science-based shortcuts from slim-down guru Jim Karas.

"The trouble with dieting," I hear many women say, "is that it takes too long. If I want to look good for my anniversary next month, I should've started losing weight way back in February. Now that I'm finally focused, it's too late." Well, yes and no. Taking the long-term approach to weight loss is wise because it means you'll lose pounds slowly and steadily -- making it more likely that you'll keep them off. But there are ways to rev up your metabolism so you burn calories and lose weight more quickly. Check out my favorite no-fail jump starts.

Watch Your Fluids

1. Drink green tea. Get this: When a recent study compared the metabolic effect of green tea (in extract) with that of a placebo, researchers found that the green-tea drinkers burned about 70 additional calories in a 24-hour period. If you can believe it, those 70 calories a day add up to a total of 7.3 pounds of fat a year! It's not magic, it's science: Researchers believe the difference is caused by metabolism-enhancing antioxidants known as catechins, which are found in green tea.

2. Avoid calories in a glass. Scientists now know that the body does not register liquid calories in the same way it does solid calories. Drinking a grande caffe mocha, for instance, won't make you feel satiated the way eating a bowl of pasta will. Which means that although the caffe mocha actually has a greater number of calories than the pasta, you're still more likely to want a second cup from Starbucks than another plate of linguine. So monitor your intake of juice, soda, coffee drinks and wine. If you consume one of each of those beverages during the day, you'll have taken in at least 800 extra calories by nighttime — and you'll still be hungry. (Incidentally, alcohol may suppress the metabolism of fat, making it tougher for you to burn those calories.)

Start Lifting

3. Buy a set of five-pound weights. It's a onetime investment you'll never regret. Here's why: Strength training builds lean muscle tissue, which burns more calories — at work or at rest — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The more lean muscle you have, the faster you'll slim down. How do you start strength training? Try some push-ups or a few squats or lunges. Use your free weights to perform simple biceps curls or triceps pulls right in your home or office. Do these exercises three to four times per week, and you'll soon see a rapid improvement in your physique.

4. Lose the salt. Sodium contributes to water retention, making you look and feel bloated. Do you eat too much salt? Probably — the daily value suggests no more than 2,400 milligrams of sodium each day (or about one teaspoon), but most of us are getting more than twice that amount. So keep an eye on your sodium intake, and that doesn't just mean ditching the saltshaker. Hidden sources include soups, canned foods and drinks (did you know a serving of regular V8 juice has 800 mg of sodium?), salty snacks such as chips and pretzels and many prepackaged foods.

Heat Things Up

5. Spice it up. Angelo Tremblay, Ph.D., director of the division of kinesiology at Laval University, in Canada, found that eating hot peppers can boost a person's basal metabolism (the total calories the body burns at rest). The reason? Capsaicin, a compound found in jalapeno and cayenne peppers, may increase your body's release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, which can speed up your metabolism and your ability to burn calories. What's more, eating hot peppers may reduce your appetite, Tremblay says, helping to curb your cravings. So spice up your stir-fried veggies, eat low-calorie chili or salsa (try them on salads and baked potatoes), and watch the pounds come off faster.

6. Get some sleep. As funny as it sounds, sleep deprivation may make you fat — and not just because you're susceptible to cases of the late-night munchies (although there's that too). Women who get less than four hours of sleep per night have a slower metabolism than those who snooze for a full eight hours, according to researchers at the University of Chicago. So don't skimp on your zzz's, and you'll be rewarded with an extra edge when it comes to shedding pounds quickly.

Move Around

7. Go for an evening walk. Don't get me wrong — exercising at any time is good for you. But evening activity may be particularly beneficial because many people's metabolism slows down toward the end of the day. Thirty minutes of aerobic activity before dinner increases your metabolic rate and may keep it elevated for another two or three hours, even after you've stopped moving. What that means for you: Those dinner calories have less of a chance to take up permanent residence on your hips.

8. Eat every meal. Listen up: Skipping meals will not make you lose weight faster. That strategy backfires because your body thinks food is in short supply, so it slows your metabolism in order to conserve energy. Over time, the result is that when you do eat — even if you consume the same foods as always — your body will be slower to use the calories as fuel, thus creating a backlog of unwanted pounds. If a hectic day makes a sit-down meal impossible, stash an energy bar or a piece of fruit in your purse or briefcase -- anything that will keep you from going hungry.

9. Add 20 minutes of exercise per day. If you're on a diet, you're probably already working out a couple of times a week. (No? Well, you should start!) But whether you exercise or not, you can get a leg up on all those other weight-loss wannabes by doing a little something extra each day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator; walk to the bus, train, or all the way to the office; window-shop with your best friend rather than sit over coffee. Taking the dog out, gardening and even housecleaning all increase the number of calories you expend. You don't have to go for a jog (although that would help!) to speed up weight loss. Twenty minutes of moderate exercise a day means you'll burn approximately 700 calories.

Drink Up!

10. H20, H20, H20. You've heard it before, and you'll hear it again. That's because drinking 64 ounces of water daily is one of the easiest ways to speed up weight loss. Your body needs water in order to efficiently metabolize stored fat. When you shortchange your supply, you're likely to slow down that process, meaning it's more difficult for you to burn calories. An easy eight glasses a day (at least!) will keep your system running smoothly.

11. Don't go for the gimmicks. At any given time, there are dozens of weight-loss hypes in the marketplace that claim to have the ability to take off 10 pounds in 10 days, or whatever. Desperation can tempt us to try anything, but you and I both know these schemes don't work. Save your money, but more importantly, save yourself from the emotional pain when these gimmicks fail. Be realistic. Jump-start your weight-loss program in ways that make sense, and not only will you be thinner, you'll be happier too.
