I have been trying to lose weight for as long as I can remember
(hmmm... maybe since birth?). I have tried dieting, getting into sports
and even drinking all sorts of weight-loss concoctions even before I was
in high school. These "concoctions" ranged from concentrated lemon
juice to cooking vinegar to gallons of water. I didn't have money back
then to binge on diet whatever so raiding our kitchen for home remedies
to obesity was the next best thing, or maybe I should say my only
option.
Actually, I'm not the morbidly obese type, even at my heaviest I did not look like the Michelin mascot or the marshmallow man on Ghostbusters. I was just generally big-boned. Probably, my genes are also to blame for the slow metabolism because even at my lightest I was never "skinny".
Anyway, just for the record, I went through the normal and preferred route of eating less and moving more, but when I stopped moving the weight came rushing back in, and it brought along reinforcements as well! What compounded my woes were my brittle bones. Being heavy all my life was taking a toll on my feet and legs. I was starting to feel pain and I could hear my bones crying in agony every time I engaged in high-impact aerobics. So my old sport of Taekwondo and Boxing were out, same with going to the gym everyday and pounding the treadmill until I ached all over.
My doctor advised me to focus on low to no impact activities such as cycling and swimming. I could still continue my gym membership but I had to make sure I do not engage in bone-jarring exercises. I was also told to stay as far away from the treadmill as possible. Kidding... I could still use the treadmill but I am forbidden to run on it because it would be like suicide for my legs' tendons and ligaments. Ouch!
I'm not much of a cycling fan, especially if it's the stationary bike, so I settled for the next best thing, doing swimming. After a while swimming laps became boring so I went on to look for "water sports" or swimming pool fitness activities.
I did find a swimming pool fitness routine online using floaters and kickboards, but I was craving for more. I wanted a total swimming pool fitness regimen. Something that would provide the therapeutic effect that my legs needed and would make me lose weight at the same time.
My internet research on pool fitness showed me my options. Aside from floaters, I came across strap-on weights, dumbbells, joggers, belts, tubes, noodles and other contraptions that could be used under water. I also found swimming pool fitness aerobic routines.
Wow, who knew that swimming pool fitness has come a long way? I didn't. My concept of swimming pool fitness was just that... to swim or wade in the water. I never knew until recently that there are now exercise equipment tailor-made for use in the pool.
I even found instructors teaching swimming pool fitness as a weight-loss alternative. Talk about no sweat weight-loss! There also those conducting therapy sessions utilizing the mechanics of swimming pool fitness. Therapy + weight loss = happiness.
It seems the fitness industry has got everything and everyone covered. If you're like me, overweight but could not engage in high-impact activities that are believed to produce the greatest weight-loss result, try swimming pool fitness activities instead. You not only lose the weight but you can also get a nice tan while you're at it.
This is totally awesome! Perfect for summer!
